Southern Maryland Studies Center

The Southern Maryland Studies Center is an archival repository and research center that seeks to collect, preserve, and provide access to materials documenting the history and culture of Southern Maryland.

Volunteer with the Southern Maryland Studies Center

The Southern Maryland Studies Center values volunteers who are interested in sharing their enthusiasm, time, talents, and experience to further our mission to collect, preserve, and provide access to materials that document the history and culture of Southern Maryland. Volunteers help in caring for our archival collections and making them accessible to future generations of researchers.

We can work with volunteers with interests in seeking academic credit, field study and practicum projects, professional experience, community service hours, and personal enrichment. All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older.

All volunteer projects are overseen by the Archivist of the Southern Maryland Studies Center who will provide the necessary training, equipment, and tools that align with current Society of American Archivists (SAA) standards and best practices. Volunteers will complete all tasks in the Reading Room of the Southern Maryland Studies Center during its normal operating hours. Remote volunteer project opportunities are limited. All current volunteer opportunities are outlined below under, "Current Volunteer Opportunities."

Please note: We are not currently accepting volunteer applications, but please look out for opportunities to volunteer in early 2026! Thank you for your ongoing support and interest in aiding the Southern Maryland Studies Center's mission and goals.
