Because one of three bites of food we eat and 90% of plant species rely on pollinators, The College of Southern Maryland has joined the coalition of colleges of Bee Campus USA in an effort to restore our native plants, their pollinators, and our indigenous ecosystems.

The Bird City Campus designation recognizes the eco-friendly work being done at CSM campuses in six areas – habitat creation, protection, and monitoring; city forest, tree, and habitat management; limiting or removing threats to birds; public education; energy and sustainability; and a commitment to the World Migratory Bird Day celebration. The “High Flyer” status is given to “those communities that truly go above and beyond in their dedication to local conservation and education.”

Eco-Hawks is a student club seeking to inform the College of Southern Maryland communities of serious environmental issues on campus and in our community and educate the student body on how to combat them. Check the CSM Student Clubs page or the CSM app for more information.

St. Mary's County Library's S.E.E.D.S. (Seed Endowment for Education, Discovery, and Sustainability)

The University of Maryland Extension Master Gardener Program is designed to train volunteer horticultural educators to support the University of Maryland Extension mission by educating residents about safe, effective and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities.

Wild Ones chapters are a space where like-minded people gather to support each other in learning about landscaping with native plants and to share with others in their communities and networks about why it’s important to reintroduce native plants into public and private gardens and how to go about doing it.

The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is an international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats. As a science-based organization, we both conduct our own research and rely upon the most up-to-date information to guide our conservation work. Our key program areas are: pollinator conservation, endangered species conservation, and reducing pesticide use and impacts.

Southern Maryland Audubon Society is a chapter of the National Audubon Society and is the largest citizen group involved in bird and nature study and natural resource conservation issues in Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s, and southern Prince George’s counties. Founded in 1971, Southern Maryland Audubon is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization incorporated in Maryland.

The Port Tobacco River Conservancy is located in Charles County, Maryland. The PTRC works with businesses, residents, local and state governments, and other conservation groups to restore and protect the river and streams in the watershed. PTRC balances restoration and protection with economic-development concerns and the value of its river and watershed to both the local and state economies.
