Develop a thesis

Thesis statement: A thesis statement makes an assertion or argument about a topic, and then shares how the topic will be explored in the rest of paper. Thesis statements are used when writing argumentative essays, persuasive essays, and many other types of college research papers.

Contact CSM Tutoring, CSM librarians or your instructor for help developing a thesis statement; or, check out the resources linked below.

Develop a research question

Research question: A research question identifies what overarching, central question will be answered in the paper. A research question does not make an assertion about a topic; rather, it leaves the answer(s) open to whatever is found in the research. Research questions are used when writing literature reviews, research articles, studies.

The resources listed below will teach you how to write an open-ended research question.
